Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How did GSNEO calculate
camp usage?
A. By leaving out most of the girls who used the camps .
IN spring, 2010 Sarah Spiegler made some calculations based on council info:
All information below is from the slide presentation of the meeting at the Macedonia headquarters in April 2010
http://www.gsneo.org/media/114712/presentation%20-%20web.pdf
Number of girls
Slide 66: 16,000 girls participated in GSNEO programs across all counties
Using the number of girls scouts (34,908) as of 4.15.2010:
***The number of girls that attended resident camp, day camps, and other summer programming (10.5%) was double the number that took part in financial literacy (4.9%).
*** Could there have been duplication in the number of girls participating in Financial Literacy and the number of girls served through "partnership with schools" since many Financial Litereacy programs took place in partnership with schools?
***46% of girls participated in GSNEO programs.
What do the other 54%do ?
This number does NOT seem to include troop and service unit camping during the school year or during the summer, unless I am reading this incorrectly. This suggests to me that the number of girl scouts using girl scout camps is higher than 10.5%. And this does not include troops that camp at non-girl scout camps.
***Out of the number of girls using gseno programming (16,000 girls), 22.8% attended resident camp, day camps, and other summer programming (again this does not seem to include troop and service unit camping).

Inspired by Sarah's number-crunching, I went back thru my Vision 2012 information. They have charts of non-council -sponsored usage numbers for each month of every camp. IN other words, troop camping & SU camping. The total is 15,606 which is 44.7% of 35,000 ( total # of girl members in GSNEO as of 4 / 15 / 2010). Adding in the 10.4% of council-sponsored camp programming produces a grand total 55.1% of the girls in GSNEO participated in the camping programs in 2008-2009. Quite a bit higher than the 10% bandied about.
VARIABLE FACTORS:
1. From these charts there is no way to tell how many of the girls camped more than once. I do not have access to this data- but it would lower the total percentage of individual girls.
2.For whatever reason, there were no chart for Wintergreen cabin. They would raise the percentage, but probably only by a very slight amount.
3 Also not included were girls who camped at NON-GSNEO owned sites because they couldn't get into GSNEO camps. These represent an unknown quantity.
Given these variables, ( and to make life easy for ourselves) let's just say that the usage number of camps by girl members is close to 50% .
Of the remaining 50% of the TOTAL girl membership - how many of them are Daisies or Brownies who are too young to camp?
