Pleasant Valley

Picture
Click here for a virtual tour of the camp, researched, photographed, and organized by a Strongsville Girl Scout.   It takes a few minutes to download - but is well worth the wait.

Pleasant Valley Camp, in the town of Green Springs, is the most western of all the GSNEO camps. It is located in the Fremont/Tiffin area and is in striking distance of Cedar Point for out of state troops looking for nearby accommodations.

Pleasant Valley is the first camp in GSNEO to be used for logging. Pleasant Valley is the only camp in the area to have unique platform tents with hard shingled roof and roll-up canvas sides. Wetlands along the edge of the camp offers eco-variety. Former owners raised maple trees & one of the trails has the remnants of a "sugar-bush" station on it.

Camp Pleasnt Valley is a half hour drive from Seneca Caverns, 'The Caviest Cave in the USA" http://www.senecacavernsohio.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seneca_Caverns_(Ohio
)   for an easy STEM ( geology / gemstone mining) program,  spend a weekend at PV, and head out for a leisurely -paced excursion to the caverns on Saturday. IN the summertime, enjoy the naturally cool underground temperatures.

A framed poem hanging in the main lodge at
Camp Pleasant Valley:

 I remember the campfire
As we sat on bended knees,
Tugging and pulling and happy memories
Ever so pleasant, we can't escape these.

I remember her happy face as she burst into song
When the day had ended
It had been long
We felt as we sang, we could do no wrong

I remember the many gadgets
That hung by her side -
Knife, compass, hatchet, pans - nothing denied
Instead of a hike, she needed a ride.

I remember her energy
As we hiked through the field
Or watched from afar as an axe she would wield
Gladly I pondered what the next hour could yield.

I remember how she wanted to do everything from scratch
For example, start a campfire without a match
Build a latrine with a cumbersome latch

I remember the raindrops that slowly
Leaked through our tent.
And the safety pin she used - oh how bent!
It served the purpose for which it was meant.

I remember she was always enthusiastic,
Always a-glow
And yet all your best made of sunshine and snow
I wanted her with me wherever I go.

I remember she never found fault with me,
Never implied my wrong by her right.
And girls by her side grew nobler and purer
as they kept in stride.

I remember the weak and the gentle, the ribald and rude
She took as she found them
And did them all good
Taught them to act the way that they should
We remember
And because we remember, The Girl Scouts of the Past
Dedicate these books to Scouts of the future
So her memory will last
